Reading Websites and Apps for Teachers

In this day and age, technology has become a part of our lives. More and more schools are incorporating computers, iPads, and so much more than we could ever imagine. Here are a few reading websites that I love using in the classroom with my students and I can not wait to share them with you!

VOOKS

Vooks offers so many amazing animated read alouds for your students to enjoy! One of the many things that I love about Vooks is that it is absolutely free for teachers to sign up. They also have an app where you can listen, watch, and read the stories on any technology device. Here is a great example of a story that they offer on their Youtube channel!

EPIC

Epic is an amazing app that offers a variety of books for students to read. It’s a platform that categorizes their books by grade and AR levels. They even have built in quizzes at their end of their texts. Students can highlight any text that they’re not familiar with and it will read and define it. They even offer read-to-me texts and audio books. When I taught Kindergarten in the classroom, I built a collection of selected texts for students for their specific reading levels. That way, students will have a wonderful selected amount of stories right at their fingertips. You can even share your collection with other teachers. Did I mention that it is absolutely free for teachers to sign up?

RAZKIDS

The thing that I love most about RazKids is that they have a program called Reading A-Z on their website. This program offers downloaded printed resources, leveled readers, and quizzes. Some leveled readers are also translated in Spanish. They even provide leveled reading, fluency, and phonics samples along with writing and vocabulary programs. Did I mention that it was also an app?

StoryLine Online

Storyline Online is a wonderful website that features celebrity hosts to read popular stories. It also offers activity guides for teachers to go along with the text. It gives you a guideline on who it is read by, suggested grade level of the text, and how long the video takes. Here’s a sample of a celebrity reading a story on Storyline Online’s Youtube channel.

NOVEL EFFECT

Saving the best for last! I can not contain my excitement on how awesome this app is! Novel Effect is an another app that offers music and sound effects when reading aloud to books. It is always a huge hit in my classroom. It is super engaging and my students love hearing the stories. They have these book stickers that they have in their shop. I have a bunch of them that I’ve placed in my library to easily see which ones are compatible with the app.

If you have a great reading website that could be helpful in the classroom, please share them down below in the comments. It could all be really beneficial to all of us! I can’t wait to hear from you!
